DOG ADOPTION

The number of accessible and reputable organizations in southern Ontario for dog adoption has become quite numerous in the past decade...which is a good thing. More and more families are discovering that dog adoption is such an amazing and viable option when adding a canine family member to your home. That is why we ask you to consider dog adoption as your first avenue when you start the search process...there are amazing dogs out there, waiting for new homes. And start the process with a realistic mindset as to what type of dog best suits your home and family situation. Your adoption organization should ask you all of the right questions, and put you through a good screening process, before simply "handing over" a dog. If they do not do that...stand back from the process, and ask your local SPCA or Humane Society about that organization's history or reputation.
You may also find some good "leads" on sites such as kijiji for dogs in need of homes, but please be aware of where the dog is coming from. Often, amateur breeders are looking for quick ways to make a buck, and are motivated by the wrong factors. Ask lots of questions, expect good answers, and be weary of someone who asks for a lot of money compared to what  adoption organizations are asking for. And we've heard some people say that they didn't adopt a dog because they want a pure breed, or breed specific dog, etc. But it is entirely possible to do that through adoption as well. For example....Lab Rescue in Oakville (where we got Jack!), Pomeranian & Small Breed rescue in Niagara Falls, Friendly Giants Dog Rescue in Ottawa...and the list goes on.
Having said all of that, your best bet is to start with your SPCA or Humane Society (links to our local organizations below), or a specific dog breed adoption organization if you know of one from your research. And if you want to broaden your search...try Petfinder, also linked below. Many wonderful adoption agencies list their available dogs on there as well. Bottom line...take your time, do your homework, and make sure everyone in your family is on the same page. Your invested time, efforts, and emotions will be paid back 100 times over by your adopted dog.

DOG NUTRITION & HEALTH

The task of pouring through books and endless websites that tout the best foods and methods for keeping your dog healthy is overwhelming. But the fact that you should feel overwhelmed is a good thing...you're doing your homework! But if you're just starting down the road of being a family with a new dog, or are committing to feeding your dog better foods, we've done some homework for you. Look through the three great links below that exist to educate the consumer, and help them become better dog owners, and ultimately, provide healthier and happier lifestyles for their dogs. Many dog websites exist to sell you stuff, and try to educate you later; these three sites do not. Learn how independent sources rank the best foods (you'll find our brands at the top!), how to read labels, industry recalls, adoption tips, useful blogs, cool stuff, etc.
